Before I design, before I create, I have to pause and arrive.

What does that even mean?

Design was introduced to me 12 years ago as a world of meeting deadlines, hitting goals, and following a set of expectations. That was just how I thought creativity worked back then.

When I discovered Buddhism some years later, I began to consider how being more connected to my body, really feeling what’s going on inside, could change how I approach design and how others experience my work.

Over the past year, I’ve been trying to figure out what fuels my natural flow of ideas. What’s the deeper purpose behind it all? As SOLA expands into mentorship, I find myself reflecting more on how best to guide other designers toward a state of balance, not just to offer a sense of sensibility in their process but to also allow them to access their creativity with better ease and intention.

What is going on in our bodies during those quiet moments when ideas are forming? How can simply being present and showing up change the way we create for the word?

I’ve realized that when I slow down and pay attention, things feel more grounded. Noticing the sensations in my body, the flow of my breathing, and the textures of my environment brings clarity. The materials I’m working with seem to come to life. The space I’m in feels richer. My intuition becomes sharper.

I try to begin every project this way, taking a moment to connect with what’s happening right here and now. For me it doesn’t have to be complicated or rigid. I just step out of my own way and let what’s already there come through. This is a practice I’m still learning and refining, but it’s something I’m committed to exploring and sharing.

As we close out the year, we’re reflecting on the joy of working on one of our most meaningful campaigns: the 16 Days of Activism for @ippf_acro. This project highlighted the diverse voices of Caribbean men stepping up to challenge harmful norms, take accountability, and work toward ending gender-based violence.

Each narrative reminded us of the strength found in everyday efforts to build safer, more equitable spaces for everyone.

Thank you for standing with us in imagining a future grounded in care, justice, and hope. Here’s to continuing this work together in the year ahead.
