We used to appreciate the beautiful, vital work of people engaged in craft, imagination, and meaning-making by calling them artists. Now we call them vendors, service providers and manufacturers of consumable material.

When a person becomes a source of quick output, their humanity recedes from our view. Not just the hours and the skill that goes into the work, but the texture of the life those hours are drawn from; the particular exhaustion that comes not from overwork alone, but from caring deeply about what you make with your mind, heart and hands. None of this is visible in a creative brief.

In a culture that has optimized for speed and distance, where you can get almost anything you want without ever having to encounter the human being behind it, we built SOLA around a belief in working intimately. In taking the time to slowly understand each other, and not just what something should look like, but why it should exist at all. That belief asks the people we work with to show up the same way we do. To be curious about our why’s and the process, not just the outcome.

But not everyone wants that. A lot of people arrive to our inbox already having decided what kind of exchange this will be.

As artists we want you to know that we feel that deeply. The void of human connection is palpable. It makes the work lonelier, and harder to do well.

The conditions that allow profound and enduring work to exist are much more fragile than they appear.

If we want art that is alive, careful, and deeply considered, then we have to protect the humanity of the people making it. 🌘🤍
